What to Expect in Counselling
The hope in providing this information is to put your mind at ease as to what you can expect from us at Soul Matters before your first appointment.
We desire for the counselling process to be comfortable, experiential and interactive (not just sitting on a couch!). The hope is to create a safe place for you to freely express your thoughts, feelings, and emotions without judgment as we journey together to work through the patterns, issues or relationships that have brought you to counselling.
Should you wish to start counselling, please give us a call at 250-221-2015. Should no one answer, please leave a message with your name and number and we will get back to you within 48 hours. One of our counsellors will call you back to conduct a 15-20 minute intake questionnaire over the phone.
This intake questionnaire provides us with your contact information and a brief description of the issues you are struggling with. This information allows us to match you with one of our therapists. At the end of the conversation, the counsellor will either go over some of our policies or refer you to a different service that would better suit your needs. This intake is then reviewed by the counselling supervisors, and your counsellor will be in touch within a week to book an appointment.
At your first appointment, your counsellor will go over the Informed Consent Form which outlines your rights as a client, and our ethical and legal obligations as counsellors. After that, the floor is yours to talk and discuss what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain out of your time in counselling. By the end of the session, you and your counsellor may have identified some therapeutic goals and ways to reach those goals in your time together.
It should be mentioned that therapy is not a quick fix for problems – there is no A-B-C formula, rather it is a process. For most of us, issues, patterns, or relationships that bring us into counselling have been developing for years, and will take some time to untangle. Because of this, we do not put a limit to the amount of sessions you can have. We will go at a pace that is right for you.
Sometimes we find ourselves in crises in life that cause us to question our faith. Here at Soul Matters, our counsellors are qualified to discuss such matters should you desire.
We see people through a holistic lens. This simply means that we look at all parts of a person’s life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual to promote maximum health. We view you the client, as the expert of your life, and will support you in your goals in counselling. We integrate interventions from various schools of thought to best suit your needs. Some modalities that we use include:
- Inner Child Work
- Trauma Focused Therapy
- Gottman couples Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
